There are two primary reasons people fail in jobs. One is poor selection and the other is a lack of necessary training. Too often, employees are brought on only to be left to "sink or swim" as they navigate the complexities of their new job alone. In other instances, nominal training is provided in the form of isolated seminars or outside speakers.

Training, however, should not be an "event" but rather a continuous process driven by your managers resulting in employee action and growth. As the educator Henry Spencer said, "The great aim of education is not knowledge, but action."

Industry spends hundreds of millions of dollars on outsourced training programs and seminars each year often with minimal results and low knowledge retention. Few organizations, however, take the time to develop internal training that is job-specific, comprehensive and effective.
